Phu Van Lau Hue flagpole. Remember the battle against Phu Van Lau in 1968

40 years have passed. Phu Van Lau flagpole . Remember the battle to occupy the flagpole Phu Van Lau in 1968. Today I had the opportunity to join the Veterans Corps (CCB) of the 6th Regiment - Phu Xuan in Bac Ninh province to visit the old battlefield. Remember the Phu Van Lau flagpole on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the complete liberation of Thua Thien Hue province and the inauguration of the monumental monument of the 6th Regiment in Tay Loc Ward. Let's review our memories with Phu Van Lau . Courtesy of the imprint and recall of the battle of occupying the flagpole Phu Van Lau in 1968.

Passing the road thousands of kilometers, Hue City appears before me. Lush green rice fields, factories, industrial parks, spacious and beautiful buildings, gentle rivers and busy streets plus busy people and cars flow up and down the air. The tranquility reminds me of my old memories of the battle of Phu Van Lau.

Here, more than 40 years ago was the place for the fierce battles between the Liberation Army and the US imperialists and the Saigon puppet army. How many comrades, our people sacrificed their heroes in return for a peaceful life today. That place is Phu Van Lau flagpole. The battle occupied the flagpole Phu Van Lau in 1968.

In this city, on the night of 30 on the first day of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Rooster 1968, our 6th Regiment - Phu Xuan Regiment was assigned by our superior to capture the enemy bases north of the Huong River in the city, including: Big Fish Gills, Small Fish Gills, Tay Loc Airport, Dai Noi and Phu Van Lau Flagpole . In particular, our K12 commandos have a secret mission to raid all the above targets to open the campaign.

The peaceful atmosphere of Hue today makes me recall the memories of the battle of Phu Van Lau flagpole.

Specifically: Company 1 + Company 3: Fighting with Big Fish Gills + Small Fish Gills; 2nd Company: Defeat Tay Loc airport; 4th Company: Attacking and occupying the Citadel and Phu Van Lau flagpole.

After a period of additional training in techniques of crossing the river and crossing the 7m high wall with manual methods, at the end of December 1967, the unit was ordered to concentrate on listening to the official's official official assignment. Comrade An, the military staff staff, directly disseminated combat plans to the sapper task force.

At 8 am on December 30, in a forest west of Huong Tra district, we officially heard the orders of General Vo Nguyen Giap and the call of the National Liberation Front afterwards, the whole unit urged Truong prepared to wait for the enemy to start.

Around 3 pm on the same day, we started our march from the rear base, until 5 pm was at the mouth of the forest. At dusk, the entire regiment's formation of nearly 2,000 people like a giant python silently crept through the fields and villages toward Hue City to approach the target. In the air, sometimes enemy reconnaissance aircraft are still archipelago, but they are unaware. Soon Hue City appeared in front of them, commandos were ordered to prepare to cross the river.

The winter night was very cold, but no one seemed to pay much attention because they focused on the mission and observed the opponent's movements. Everyone urgently packed, dressed, neat gunners began to cross the Ke Van River (Kim Long) to reach the goal. The river is not wide, but to ensure the secret, all movements must be gentle, careful. In the end, we managed to reach the other side safely, only Comrade Suc, the 1st Company soldier - because of the cold and cramp, died while crossing the river.

Upon landing, the nose according to the task is assigned urgently to the location of his gathering. Our 4th Company (C4), led by Comrade Tung, raided the Gate of Huu Gate (Huu Gate), went straight to the Citadel, destroyed Hac Bao Company, captured Phu Van Lau flagpole.

Exactly 2 hours and 30 minutes, a series of our special forces ripped apart the quiet night soaring to targets such as Phu Bai and Tay Loc airports to support the special task force.

At the same time, 3 signal flares of the company commander fired, signaling the entire formation to head for the gate of Huu. Here, we encountered fierce resistance from the enemy. Because the terrain is not yet dark at night - the access road has to cross a unique bridge, so the access is very difficult. The enemy was shot down from above (city gate), our forces suffered many casualties, including Comrade Tung leading the way. The situation was very complicated but with determination, Comrade Do Phu Khanh, deputy commander decided: organizing the remaining forces, taking advantage of terrain, terrain and military technology to find ways to approach with city gate.

After a period of fierce fighting, our army finally broke down the gate and continued to attack. At this time, the squad only had dozens more people, read by comrade Khanh and comrade Ox, headed straight for the goal. On the way approaching through Huu gate, about a few hundred meters, the unit met an old man. Wearing a white shirt, white pants, holding an umbrella (later known as Mr. Khanh). We asked him to lead the way to the Inner City. Despite his fearful attitude, he accepted it. About a kilometer away, we continued capturing a soldier of the enemy's army of forces, forcing this guy to continue leading the way.

Because the soldier could not hear clearly in the North, he told him to take him back to the Inner City, but he led him back to his Army of Tools. Therefore, here again encountered the enemy's resistance, our troops sacrificed 1 more comrade (Comrade The). During the fight, we caught a Security soldier right away, my hometown in Thanh Hoa. Exploiting it said, he hit the wrong target. This is not the Inner City. Immediately we forced him to lead the way to the Inner City.

Arriving at the front of Phu Van Lau and Dai Noi flagpoles; Mr. Khanh decided to divide into 2 points: Nose 1: Comrade Khanh and Comrade Suu commanded and captured Dai Noi; Mui 2: consists of 4 comrades: Bui Van Cuc, Leader and comrades Nguyen Duc Thuan, Nguyen Ngoc Triu and Nguyen Van Huynh to conquer Phu Van Lau flagpole.

Approaching process, Mr. Huynh sacrificed his remaining 3 comrades. Taking advantage of the terrain to approach the goal of occupying each floor of the Phu Van Lau flagpole, until about 5 am we took control of the 3rd floor of the Phu Van Lau flagpole, captured 5 more guards, collected 2 kac-pin guns, 2 12.8 mm machine guns and all enemy ammunition.

At this time, the nose of the Great Noi battle also destroyed the headquarters of the detective company, completely mastering the Hanoi. Comrade Khanh returned to Phu Van Lau flagpole and ordered us to tear down the enemy flag and pull our flag to the top of Phu Van Lau flagpole - the highest flagpole, signaling that our army has taken control of the city. This time around 8:30 am on the first day of the New Year.

Not long after that, when the smoke of gun smoke cleared, the enemy began to discover our flags were flying them using artillery from the South of the Perfume River and HU1A helicopters frantically bombarded, combined with soldiers. landed from 4 ships on the Perfume River to try to retake the Phu Van Lau flagpole, but they were helpless because at this time our infantry battalions were ready to destroy them.

The fight between us and the enemy in the following days became more and more fierce because the enemy was reinforcing the main divisions such as the Marine Division, Flying Cavalry Division, in coordination with the local field forces. with the support of long-range artillery from the 7th Fleet fired into counterattack.

With the brave fighting spirit of our soldiers plus the support of the compatriots and Hue patriotic forces, our army maintained the battlefield, defending the revolutionary flag that flew all 26 days and nights. on the top of Phu Van Lau flagpole. The general offensive and uprising that year dealt a fatal blow to the enemy, completely reversing the enemy's war strategy that forced General Oet-Monen to return to the garden, and President Nicholson to resign - to stop throwing. from the 20th parallel and accept negotiating with us at the 4-party Conference in Paris.

With this feat, the 6th Regiment was given 8 golden words (Attack - Rebellion - Hero - Resilience) by the National Front of the Liberation also from here the Regiment regained its name: Doan Phu Xuan Hero.

The war has receded for nearly 40 years, the former comrades who died. Returning to the old battlefield this time, each of us is deeply moved and recalled the memories of the years we fought here. We remember about the bearing, support and protection of the people and revolutionary facilities in the liberated areas of Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Thuy and Huong Tra districts during the years of arduous and evil fighting. paralysis.
